Remco Evenepoel has completed his first moments at Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. The Belgian has already met with the entire team, been to California for a number of wind tunnel tests and recently did so again in England. The Belgian’s first impressions are more than good, he says in a double interview with Johan Museeuw HLN.
Evenepoel confirms to Museeuw that after all those years at Soudal Quick-Step, he was looking for a new structure, for people who would trigger him again. And that works for the time being. “I think I have made the right choice. I will adapt to the new philosophy as best I can and see what results it leads to. My first impressions were very positive.”
“Everything is a bit more ‘structured’. On January 1, for example, every rider will already know his complete internship and competition schedule for 2026. That’s how I like it. The team, including riders, has more than 200 people. Each with their own specific function and tasks, which were cumulated a little more at Soudal Quick-Step (+- 80 people, ed.).”
Evenepoel also discusses the wind tunnel tests in more detail. “During my wind tunnel tests at Specialized in California, I was assisted by an extensive crew. Previously: three people. Especially the input from aerodynamics freaks Dan Bigham (Head of Engineering, ed.) and Jonny Wale (Technical Performance Manager, ed.) was enormous. Not that they could change much. But their small, sometimes crazy ideas did have added value.”
And so the Belgian is looking forward to the new season. A season in which a ‘program A’ with classics and Tour is currently on the board and a ‘program B’ with the Giro and the Tour. “It’s nice to be able to look ahead. In recent months I had to put aside the pressure and stress of the negotiations and constantly having to keep things quiet. At a certain point it had become so big that it led to defects left and right. Being a few percent less quickly affects your feelings and the results at that high level.”
