Get ready, cycling and badminton fans! The much-anticipated National Velodrome and Badminton Center on the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown, west Dublin, is finally moving from blueprints to reality. Construction is slated to kick off in the coming months, marking a significant milestone for Irish sports infrastructure. The government has officially awarded the contract for this state-of-the-art facility, with an estimated budget of up to €100 million.
This project has been a long time coming, a journey marked by years of discussion and planning. Though, recent momentum has made it clear that the advancement of this shared cycling and badminton hub is now an unstoppable force. For American sports fans, imagine the excitement surrounding a new,world-class stadium for a beloved team – that’s the level of anticipation building for this facility.
The government has now provided a concrete timeline for the construction and completion of the velodrome and badminton centre. While the exact final cost is still being refined, the cycling community, much like fans eagerly awaiting a new ballpark or arena, is primarily focused on seeing the first shovels break ground.
Confirmation of construction commencing in the first quarter of next year is detailed in the Department of Culture,Communications and Sport’s sectoral investment plan. This plan elaborates on the government’s commitments to sports development, as outlined in the National Development Plan Review 2025.
The ambitious project, the National Velodrome and Badminton centre, is scheduled to begin construction in early 2025 and is projected for completion by the third quarter of 2027. The government’s current estimate places the total cost between €50 million and €100 million.
Notably, this velodrome and badminton centre is the only National Sports Campus project for which a contract has been awarded to date, according to the sectoral investment plan. Industry insiders suggest that Walls Construction is set to be the main contractor for this significant undertaking.
minister of State Charlie mcconalogue highlighted the importance of this plan, stating, “The publication of this plan is important because it shows our commitment to continued investment in sport facilities across the country through schemes such as the Community Sport Facilities Fund and Large-Scale Sport infrastructure Fund.” He further emphasized, “it also commits to ensuring the completion of major national sports facilities over the next five years including the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre, and the National Cricket Centre.”
The plan also addresses broader governmental commitments, with minister McConalogue adding, “This Plan will also provide for funding to ensure the sustainability of our Post Office Network, in line with the commitment we made in the Program for Government.”
Addressing Potential Concerns: Some might question the significant investment in a velodrome, especially when other sports facilities may also require upgrades. However, this project represents a strategic investment in a specific, high-potential sport. For cycling enthusiasts, this is akin to the development of a dedicated Formula 1 track or a world-class basketball arena – it provides a crucial platform for elite training, competition, and the development of future champions. The dual-purpose nature of the facility, accommodating both cycling and badminton, also maximizes its utility and potential return on investment, ensuring it serves a broader sporting community.
