The 48th edition of the Dakar Rally is set to challenge competitors with a demanding course across the Saudi Arabian desert from January 3 to 17. Race organizers have unveiled a route described as “tough” and featuring a “balance” of difficulties, promising an intense test for the 812 registered participants.
A total of 325 vehicles, including 118 motorcycles, will navigate an 8,000 km loop, with 4,900 km dedicated to timed special stages spread across 13 demanding days. Race director David Castera emphasized the rigorous nature of this year’s event, stating, it’s going to be a tough Dakar.
he added that the organizers aimed for a balance in the creation of the route, while maintaining an intact standard of difficulty.
The rally will commence and conclude in Yanbu, a coastal city on the Red Sea. The challenging terrain will feature a mix of fast-paced tracks, treacherous rocky sections, and formidable dune fields. Notably, two marathon stages (January 4-5 and 9-10) will require competitors to spend a night in a remote bivouac, adding an extra layer of endurance to the competition.
A “100% Sand and Dunes” Special Stage Awaits
Mirroring a trend from previous years, the route for these marathon stages will be distinct for motorcycles (FIM) and cars/trucks (FIA), with separate bivouacs to manage logistics. The sixth stage, the longest of the rally at 920 km, includes a significant 331 km special stage described as 100% sand and dunes.
This grueling test comes just before the rest day in Riyadh on January 10. Castera highlighted the potential impact of this stage, noting, There will be a lot of dunes and some will spend the night there or even arrive in the morning
in Riyadh.Navigation will also be a key factor in the 11th stage, running between Bisha and Al Henakiyah.
The Dakar Rally serves as the opening round of the five-event World Rally Raid Championship (W2RC). saudi Arabia has been the host nation for the Dakar sence 2020, following previous iterations in the Sahel region and South America. The choice of venue has, however, drawn criticism due to human rights concerns in the ultraconservative kingdom, despite recent economic and social reforms initiated by the monarchy.
Expert Insights and Fan Engagement
For seasoned rally enthusiasts, the emphasis on sand and dunes in the sixth stage is a classic Dakar element, reminiscent of its early days in North Africa. This type of terrain tests not only the drivers’ skill but also the resilience of their machines, much like a high-stakes NASCAR race tests pit crews and chassis engineers. The separate routes for bikes and cars, a logistical challenge akin to managing different divisions in a multi-sport event like the Olympics, ensures each category faces its unique set of obstacles.
the inclusion of marathon stages, where teams must manage repairs and rest with minimal support, adds a strategic dimension. This is comparable to a baseball team having to play a doubleheader with a depleted bullpen – resource management becomes paramount. Fans can expect
