Basautarra Club Dominates Cross Country, Inspiring Autonomy On and Off the Track

Basautarra Club’s Cross Country Triumph: A Masterclass in athlete Autonomy and Dedication

October 26, 2023

This year has been nothing short of stunning for the Basautarra club, a testament to their unwavering commitment and innovative approach to adapted athletics. This past weekend, the picturesque fields of the Palacio de La Magdalena bore witness to yet another commanding performance from this exceptional team. Stars like Ángela de Miguel, Arrate Sanz, Uxue Abasolo, Iñaki Abando, and the junior Spanish champion Hodei Fernández, crossed the finish line in rapid succession, showcasing their peak form and the club’s remarkable success.

But the gleaming medals and triumphant finishes are merely the visible results of a deeply ingrained, almost artisanal dedication. The journey to this point involved three and a half months of rigorous preparation, encompassing challenging cross-country races in Zornotza,Lasarte, and Laudio, alongside countless miles logged in Berango and Basauri. Coach Javi Conde articulates the intensity of this process:

“They have been very hard months. We operate like any other club. The difference is that each athlete has different needs and abilities, and that forces us to reinvent ourselves every day.”
Javi Conde, Coach

The Path to Empowered Athletes: Fostering Autonomy

In every training session, Javi Conde works with athletes who possess diverse intellectual or physical disabilities. while the technical demands can be immense, Conde’s vision is clear and unwavering: We try to make them more and more autonomous. That will help them in sport, but also in life. This ideology mirrors the dedication seen in elite sports programs across the U.S., where individualized training plans are crucial for unlocking an athlete’s full potential, whether they’re aiming for an olympic medal or personal bests.

Conde’s viewpoint is deeply personal, informed by his own history and his aspirations for his athletes. He acknowledges that the journey is ongoing, with more competitions, greater visibility, and more young athletes to mentor on the horizon. Yet, as long as there’s a starting line, he’ll be there, channeling the same passion that fueled his own 10,000-meter races in 1992, now dedicated to guiding a 17-year-old who dreams of emulating his coach’s legacy.

While the accolades are significant, conde finds his greatest motivation not in the medal count, but in the daily progress of his athletes. I am proud to see how they work. His day-to-day improvements excite me, like the first time. For Conde, collective triumph isn’t a predetermined outcome, but the natural culmination of countless individual victories. This philosophy is powerfully demonstrated by the athletes who are set to represent their club at the upcoming Virtus Cross Country World Championships in Italy: Mikel García, Ángela de Miguel, Raúl Fernández, and Ibai Magdaleno. Their journey exemplifies the profound impact of dedicated coaching and a focus on empowering every athlete to achieve their personal best.

Potential Areas for Further Investigation:

  • The long-term impact of Javi Conde’s “autonomy” philosophy on the
