Commonwealth Games Sports: List & Selection Process

Abhishek Tripathi, Jagran New Delhi. A formal decision has been taken regarding hosting the Commonwealth Games 2030 (CWG). Commonwealth Sport, the global governing body of the Commonwealth Games, on Wednesday announced that Ahmedabad has been chosen as the host city of the centenary edition. The decision was taken at the General Assembly meeting held in Glasgow, where representatives of 74 member countries and territories were present.

Along with the confirmation of hosting, it was also reported that CWG 2030 will include 15 to 17 sports. This decision has been taken on the basis of recently completed sports program review. Under this, sports like athletics, swimming, boxing, netball have already been decided, while discussions on other sports included in the program will start next month. The full game list will be released next year. Apart from this, the host country will also get an opportunity to add two new or traditional sports.

Will make successful programs within budget limits

When asked about the apprehensions of financial irregularities related to the 2010 Delhi CWG scam, Gujarat Principal Secretary (Sports) Ashwini Kumar said that we have learned from other editions in the world. We will make CWG a successful program within the budget limit. We will form the organizing committee within a month. Construction of most of the venues is complete and some events can be organized even today. Two big sports complexes, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and Police Academy Sports Enclave, are being prepared in Ahmedabad. Therefore there will be no problem.

Ahmedabad preparations

  2. Aquatics Centre, Football Stadium and Indoor Arena are also being built under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave.
  3. India is also planning to host the 2036 Olympic Games and Ahmedabad is a major contender for that too. Infrastructure is being prepared for this.
