PSG – Tottenham: 5-3
In Paris, the Champions League winner received the winner of the Europa League. Nevertheless, the start of the match went smoothly. Both teams are missing a lot of strong players and it showed. The unknown Ndjantou was Enrique’s surprise. Ten minutes before half-time, Richarlison gave Tottenham the lead after a clever attack: striker’s brother Kolo Muani headed in front, the Brazilian nodded in. The Spurs performed a lot better than last weekend against Arsenal. On the stroke of half time, that mediocre first half was completely forgotten. Vitinha kicked the leather wonderfully into the crossing in one go.
Immediately after the break, Tottenham responded again. Ex-PSG player Kolo Muani scored the 1-2 through Marquinhos’ head and the crossbar against the ropes. But again Tottenham could not celebrate for long: Vitinha was looking forward to a second gem and kicked in beautifully, this time with his left hand. However, the Parisian hunger had not yet been satisfied: Ruiz and Pacho made it 3-2 and 4-2, with less than 65 minutes on the clock. Kolo Muani kept his team’s chances intact with his second of the evening, but Vitinha scored his third from the spot to finally kill the game.
Atletico Madrid – Inter: 2-1
This match was announced in advance as a tactical joust, but both teams started with an open mind. Dimarco shot Musso twice, but he was unable to score. A little later that happened on the other side: the referee first had to check after an alleged handball by Alvarez, but still ruled that the Argentinian’s goal was legal. Afterwards, Inter took control of the match again. It pushed Atletico backwards and was rewarded for it in the second half: Zielinski completed a great attack. That seemed to be the signal for Atletico to start playing football again: Simeone’s team created chances and was rewarded in the end. Giménez made it 2-1, the Metropolitano exploded.
Liverpool – PSV: 1-4
Liverpool are in dramatic form and have already lost six of their twelve games in the Premier League. That form crisis also became clear early on against PSV. After 5 minutes, Van Dijk incomprehensibly touched the ball with his hand, Perisic kicked the subsequent penalty kick in ice cold. It typifies the period in which Van Dijk is living. The reaction of The Reds was not long in coming: Szoboszlai made it 1-1 after fifteen minutes. The home team then looked for the lead, but the crossbar and goalkeeper Kovar saved PSV.
After the break, PSV was there again: Til suddenly appeared in front of Mamardashvili and deflected the 1-2 against the ropes. The Eindhoven team were simply the better team in the second half and made it 1-3 twenty minutes before the end. Yet the cup had not yet been emptied to the bottom: Driouech made 1-4, his second of the evening. How much credit does Liverpool coach Slot have left?
Olympiakos – Real Madrid: 3-4
Playing football in Greece: always difficult. In a real turmoil, Real, without the injured Courtois, fell behind early on. Fortunately, the Madrilenians can always count on Mbappé in difficult circumstances. The Frenchman scored the 1-1 after a counterattack. Not much later it was he again who also made it 1-2 with a header. Not two without three, the superstar thought. He scored the 1-3 before half an hour, his third goal in seven minutes. A lightning-fast hat-trick. Vinicius Junior could not be left empty-handed. He scored the 1-4 and Madrid’s fourth goal in ten minutes, but VAR intervened.
Olympiakos did not give up in the second half, but the 2-3 was quickly neutralized by a fourth goal from Mbappé. Yet the Greeks continued to believe in their chances. When Kaabi made it 3-4 ten minutes before the end, it promised to be an exciting final phase, but Olympiakos was unable to equalize.
Frankfurt – Atalanta: 0-3
Atalanta – which has only two wins in Serie A – seems to be a different animal in the Champions League. Lookman had the chance to make it 0-1, but hit the post from close range. The rest of the first half was in vain: both teams clearly did not want to lose and played it safe. After the break, Atalanta opted for full attack. Lookman, Éderson and De Ketelaere made it 0-3 in five crazy minutes. For our compatriot it was only his third of the season for Atalanta. The Italian sub-topper already has 10 points this campaign and will almost certainly reach the next round.
Arsenal – Bayern: 3-1
The two best clubs of the moment faced each other in London. Arsenal started best and took the lead after a corner – how could it be otherwise? Then seventeen-year-old Karl equalized. But perhaps even worse for Arsenal, it saw in-form Trossard drop out. His replacement, Madueke, made the deserved 2-1 halfway through the second half. Ten minutes before the end, Martinelli also scored after Neuer’s miss and Arteta handed Kompany his first defeat of the season.
Strong Arsenal blame Vincent Kompany and Bayern Munich for their first defeat of the season and remain sovereign in the lead in the Champions League
Sporting CP – Club Brugge: 3-0
Club Brugge faced a difficult assignment in Lisbon. Ten minutes into the first half it seemed like they would get help after an extremely strict red card for Sporting, but VAR intervened. Sad but correct. In what followed, Sporting outclassed the people of Bruges, resulting in a logical 2-0 halftime score. When Trincao made it 3-0 in the second half, the books were completely closed.
If even Hans Vanaken fails: Club Brugge will lose without a chance in Lisbon and will see their chances for the next round shrinking
FC Copenhagen – Kairat Almaty: 3-2
The goals also came smoothly in the matches in the early evening.
It was easy to see why both teams were in the basement of the standings before the match. Copenhagen dominated, but you shouldn’t watch this match for fun. Halfway through the first half, the home team was rewarded for its efforts. Almaty – Club Brugge’s future opponent – really didn’t manage anything and was happy that it was only 1-0 at the break.
After half-time, Almaty actually came very close to the equalizer when a falling ball was wonderfully taken. The shot exploded onto the crossbar. A few minutes later the goal came on the other side. The referee was called to the VAR after a handball, after which Larsson kicked the 2-0 against the ropes. Fifteen minutes before the end the books could be completely closed when a long shot was deflected into the goal. In the last ten minutes, Almaty – partly due to a blunder by the Copenhagen goalkeeper – scored twice, but that turned out to be too late. The Danes have taken the first victory of their campaign.
Paphos – AS Monaco: 2-2
Pafos is one of the surprises in the Champions League. The Cypriot debutant only lost to Bayern – no shame – and won against Villarreal last match day. Pocognoli wanted to see a reaction from his team after the zero out of nine in the competition. He seemed to get that too: Minamino put Monaco at 0-1 after five minutes. However, that lead did not last long. David Luiz – we didn’t know he still played football – scored the 1-1 in an unparalleled way. Just before the half hour mark, Balogun gave the Monegasques the lead again, after which the match continued to go back and forth.
After the break, Pafos, led by a hyper-enthusiastic coach, continued to look for the equalizer, but they didn’t really get close. The 1-3 was closer than the 2-2, but Balogun failed to finish. And so Pafos stayed in the match. In minute 88, Monaco was in trouble: a header hit the crossbar and was then headed into its own goal via Salisu. Pocognoli is already under fire after nine games.
