This notable run is not a stroke of luck,but rather the culmination of a strategic overhaul of the club’s youth progress program. As Guilian Preud’homme, CEO of Club NXT and son of legendary coach Michel preud’homme, explained, The foundation for this success was laid by Pascal De Maesschalck, Carl hoefkens, and Rik De Mil. The club’s ambitious goal, set a few years ago, was to have half of the senior team’s roster comprised of academy graduates by 2024. While Preud’homme acknowledges the strength of their current generation, he admits that four wins without conceding a goal was unexpected, especially at the U19 level, where the game remains marked by youth and emotion. The victory against Barcelona is the icing on the cake.

Adding to the team’s triumph is the fact that thay achieved these results while missing three key starters who were representing Belgium in the U17 World Cup in Qatar. What makes this success even better is that Barcelona fielded its best team, and we had to deal without these three players. That says a lot about the depth and quality of our training, Preud’homme emphasized. this demonstrates a robust talent pipeline and a well-drilled squad capable of overcoming adversity.

The growing international recognition for Club Brugge’s youth setup is palpable. preud’homme shared an anecdote from a pre-match dinner with opponents: The day before the match, we always have dinner with our opponents, and I see today a lot more recognition for our operation than four years ago. Barcelona literally asked us how we could be so successful at European level with less resources and a small talent base.

Preud’homme’s response highlighted a core principle of their success: efficiency and shared responsibility. In Barcelona, for every place in the staff, they have two people. We work with fewer people, but everyone is responsible for their area. this is what we learned from Bart Verhaeghe, Vincent Mannaert, and Bob Madou. Crucially, this philosophy extends across the entire club. And the most notable: we have extended the philosophy of the first team to the NXT Club and the academy. All our teams play according to the same principles. This unified approach ensures a seamless transition for players moving up through the ranks and a consistent playing style that is recognizable from the academy to the senior squad.
