Basketball Federation: New Leadership & Structure

The Costa Rican Basketball Federation (FECOBA) recently convened its Assembly of affiliated Associations, a pivotal meeting where new members were elected to fill vacant positions on the Board of Directors for the upcoming term. This assembly marks a critically important moment for the sport in Costa Rica, as the newly formed leadership team prepares to steer its future.

During the session, representatives from various associations meticulously evaluated candidate profiles and deliberated on proposals before casting their votes. The process culminated in the election of a new Board of Directors, tasked wiht guiding FECOBA’s initiatives.

This signifies a commitment to advancing women’s basketball, a sentiment echoed by vice President Andrea Casalvolone. Very happy to except this new challenge, I reiterate my commitment to basketball, which gave me a lot in my life; it made me a triumphant professional, a good person, with a very gorgeous family, and now it is time to give back those experiences I have to current basketball, Casalvolone stated, expressing her dedication to the sport that has shaped her life.

New President Mauricio ortiz emphasized the critical importance of collaborative effort and obvious communication with all stakeholders in national basketball. We are going to work as the collegial body that we are. The successes and failures are going to belong to everyone; this allows us to have greater openness to dialog and better decision-making, Ortiz remarked, highlighting his vision for a unified and communicative leadership approach.

The participating associations expressed satisfaction with the election outcomes. Ernesto Bonilla, representing the santaneña Basketball Association, commented on the rigorous selection process. it was hard work over the last month, with many meetings, virtual sessions and even interviews with some of them, until reaching today’s appointments, who we believe are the right people and with all the capabilities to continue developing basketball in Costa Rica, Bonilla said, underscoring the thoroughness of the selection and the confidence placed in the new board.

Furthermore, the assembly agreed to immediately launch a comprehensive action plan. This plan includes crucial work meetings with established commissions to meticulously define objectives for the remainder of the current year and the commencement of 2026. This proactive approach signals a clear intent to build momentum and achieve tangible progress in the near future.
