Aaron Chia, a top-tier Malaysian men’s doubles badminton player, is channeling his full focus toward the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand. This dedication comes on the heels of being named Melaka Sportsman of the Year. The 28-year-old athlete, originally from Batu Berendam, is currently immersed in intensive training, foregoing tournaments this month to prepare for the biennial multisport event after a demanding European schedule.
“This award is a meaningful source of motivation, and I’m deeply appreciative of the Melaka state government’s unwavering support,” Chia stated. “My primary objective now is to concentrate on my training and secure a medal for our national contingent at the SEA Games in Thailand.”
Chia received the prestigious award,which includes a trophy,the Challenge Trophy,and a cash prize of RM3,000,from the Governor of Melaka,Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.
Looking ahead to the SEA Games, Chia indicated that he might explore new partnerships in the men’s doubles event as a strategic trial, though any final decisions will rest with the coach. He expressed confidence in his ability to perform well alongside fellow Melaka-born athletes Man Wei Chong or Tee Kai Wun, should they be paired together for the competition.
Following the SEA Games, Chia and his regular partner, Soh Wooi yik, are slated to reunite for the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, in December. This reunion marks a return to their established partnership after a period of potential experimentation.
