The Australian Open is part of the BWF World Tour Super 500 system and is the last prestigious tournament before the World Tour Finals (annual final) in badminton.

This year’s tournament also brought together many players from the top 10 in the world, such as An Se Young, Miyazaki, Intanon or Rankireddy – Shetty… But then the athletes from Indonesia dominated as the tournament entered its final stages.

Excluding the men’s singles, Indonesian badminton stars dominated 4 out of 5 finals of the tournament, from the women’s singles to the doubles events.

In the women’s singles, Putri Wardani (world number 7) was ranked second and showed a very consistent performance throughout the tournament.

Wardani didn’t drop a set in the first three games. In the semifinals, the Indonesian fought a tough battle with Michelli Li (number 7 on the seeding list) and ultimately won 17:21, 21:16 and 21:18.

In the final, Wardani will face An Se Young, the player who has dominated women’s singles badminton for the past two years.

The men’s singles was the only event in which the Indonesian players were unsuccessful at the tournament, as star player Jonatan Christie was eliminated in the first round.

On the contrary, the Indonesian men’s doubles players shone and turned the final into a real internal competition in the archipelago’s badminton village. The duo Alfian/Fikri (number 5 on the seeding list) meets the pair Indra/Joaquin.

Indra and Joaquin, both in their early 20s, are promising Indonesian players. They caused an upset in the semi-finals by defeating the number two seeds Malaysian duo Fei and Izzuddin.

Another all-Indonesian final also took place in women’s doubles. The Indonesian players were not even seeded in this competition, but still defeated a number of strong opponents to reach the final.

Indonesia will therefore win at least two and possibly even four titles in this tournament. This is a real shock for the badminton world elite, as previously only China had enough top athletes to dominate such a prestigious tournament.
