(Reuters) – Carlos Alcaraz (Spain), the world No. 1 ranked men’s tennis player, announced on the 18th that he will withdraw from the Davis Cup final tournament in Bologna, Italy, due to swelling in his hamstring.

Alcaraz’s injury worsened during the ATP Finals. In the final on the 16th, he faced world No. 2 Jannik Sinner (Italy) and lost.

“I have swelling in my right hamstring and my doctor has advised me not to play,” Alcaraz said on Instagram. “I have always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing and I am really looking forward to competing in the Davis Cup. I am going home with a broken heart.”

Italian representative Sinner announced last month that he would not be participating in this year’s Davis Cup. Lorenzo Musetti, who represents his country and is ranked 8th in the world, will also be absent.
