Ajax Prioritizes Technical Director Search Before Naming New Head Coach
The pursuit of Landzaat is not entirely new for the Amsterdam-based club. Technical Director Alex Kroes had previously attempted to bring him onto the staff of the now-departed John Heitinga. However, at that time, Landzaat had already committed to the Indonesian football Association, opting to fulfill his role there. Following indonesia’s failure to qualify for the World Cup,that collaboration concluded,reopening the door for potential new opportunities.
Landzaat’s coaching journey has seen him serve as an assistant under several respected figures. He held assistant coaching roles at Feyenoord with Giovanni van bronckhorst and Jaap Stam, at Lech Poznan with john van den Brom, and at Ferencváros under Pascal Jansen. Notably, he worked with Michael Grim at Willem II between July 2021 and April 2022, a period that allowed Grim to develop a strong understanding of Landzaat’s capabilities.

The 36-time Dutch international is widely regarded as a calm and personable individual, possessing a tactically sharp mind that makes him a valuable asset as an assistant coach. This is particularly relevant given the current situation where Grim, the Ajax U19 coach, has been stepping in as an interim head coach. Grim’s current support staff has been limited, with Paul Nuijten stepping in for a recent match against FC Utrecht. Nuijten’s coaching experience primarily lies as a head of training and a brief interim role with Scottish club Queen’s Park, where he was brought in by current Director of Football Marijn Beuker.

With general Manager Menno Geelen indicating that Grim will likely remain in his interim capacity until a new technical director is appointed, the need for a more experienced and robust coaching staff becomes paramount. While Jordi Cruyff is reportedly a strong candidate to succeed Kroes as technical director, the club is understood to be evaluating several other individuals for this crucial position.
