Football icons Unite: Zico and Roberto Baggio Share a Moment at Maracanã
Football history was made last Friday,the 10th,as two of the game’s most revered number 10s,Brazilian legend Zico and Italian maestro roberto Baggio,crossed paths at the iconic Maracanã Stadium. Baggio, a long-time admirer of Flamengo’s idol, seized the opportunity to capture a memorable photo with “Galinho” (Little Rooster), as Zico is affectionately known.
“What a joy to see you again after so long in yoru beloved land. You were my inspiration and I dreamed of being like you! Big Zico, I love you well,” Baggio expressed in a heartfelt Instagram post, sharing a picture alongside Zico from the Maracanã locker room. The legendary Flamengo star reciprocated the sentiment.
“Thanks a lot, Roberto. What a joy to be with you at our Maracanã. Seeing you is always a pleasure. Thank you for everything you have done in Italian and world football,” Zico replied in the comments of Baggio’s post.
BAGGIO’S LONG-STANDING ADMIRATION FOR ZICO
Roberto Baggio, famously voted the world’s best player in 1993, holds a unique place in Brazilian football lore for his missed penalty in the 1994 World cup final, a moment that sealed Brazil’s fourth title. Though, baggio has consistently shown nothing but respect and admiration for Brazilian football, particularly its stars.
In a revealing interview back in 2010, Baggio was asked if he harbored any ill feelings towards Brazil. His response was surprisingly warm and insightful. “I’m not angry with Brazil.On the contrary, my biggest idol is Zico and I grew up watching him play for Flamengo in the 80s. I was and will always be an admirer of Brazilian football,” Baggio stated during his conversation with Esporte espetacular on TV Globo.
