Wembanyama: Spurs Extend Rookie Until 2027

Spurs have extended Victor Wembanyama’s contract by one year until 2027.

Drafted in first position in 2023, Victor Wembanyama, the French phenomenon now aged 21, signed a three-year contract at the start that his team could extend for one season unilaterally.

The Spurs have unsurprisingly decided to extend their jewel on financial terms that are favorable to them: “rookie” contracts, i.e. beginners in the North American league, are capped and thus remain far from the sums that “veteran” players can negotiate.

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, for example, signed a contract last year estimated at $314 million over 5 years.

“Wemby”, whose rookie contract is estimated at $55 million over 4 years, will have to wait until the 2027-2028 season to be eligible for a lease which promises to be colossal.

The French giant (2.24 m) has not played in an official match since his first selection for the All-Star Game in February due to a thrombosis in his right shoulder.

Now recovered, he participated in four pre-season matches and is expected on the courts on Wednesday for the Spurs’ first match in Dallas the day after the NBA resumed.

The Spurs also announced Thursday that they had extended their fullback Stephon Castle, elected rookie of the year in the spring, for a third season until 2027.
