Wahbi Khazri, a name that often sparked debate during his playing days, is once again addressing the persistent criticisms surrounding his lifestyle and fitness. Now a free agent after his departure from Montpellier last June, the 34-year-old tunisian international, who previously enjoyed a notable stint with ASSE from 2018 to 2022, insists he still possesses the “desire to play football,” despite acknowledging “intricate” seasons at his former club, MHSC.
Khazri Defends His Approach to the Game
Having turned down an offer from his “club of heart,” Bastia, with a heavy heart, khazri is now actively seeking a “nice project where I can have fun.” He elaborated, “If there’s an ambitious project that appeals to me, I’ll go for it. If nothing materializes, we’ll have to sit down as a family and perhaps acknowledge that it’s time to retire.”
Speaking on the RMC program “The Game of Truth,” Khazri directly confronted his detractors, notably those who frequently scrutinized his weight and lifestyle throughout his career. “My weight and my lifestyle have often been criticized,” he stated. “Yet, I played my thirty matches per season and rarely suffered serious injuries. If I had truly been overweight as everyone claimed…” He further emphasized his commitment, adding, “I had the opportunity to play for ten years and represented my country with honor. Every day, I make an effort to run, do core exercises, and touch the ball whenever possible. This is also why I trained with Bastia.”
“It’s Easy to Criticize When Things Aren’t Going Well”
Khazri also sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the end of his tenure at Montpellier and his relationship with manager Michel Der Zakarian.”After being dismissed, he made criticisms towards Téji Savanier and myself, though not directly. I didn’t appreciate that. I felt it was necessary to set the record straight at the end of the season. People can form thier own opinions. I stand by my actions.”
Addressing the critiques of his physical condition, khazri countered, “The coach made his decisions, but to claim that the players weren’t putting in the effort is entirely false. It’s easy to point fingers when results are poor. If we start making excuses that aren’t related to football, I find it arduous to accept. I never slacked off; I completed all training sessions last year and didn’t sustain a single injury. if one is overweight or out of shape, injuries are certain. The coaches chose not to play me in certain matches, and I accept that without complaint.”
As a former ASSE player who made 114 appearances,Khazri remains keen to dispel the recurring criticisms that have shadowed his career, offering a candid viewpoint on his dedication and approach to the sport.
