The Green & Or university badminton squad launched their season last weekend, facing tough competition in their opening team events. The men battled it out at ETS, while the women showcased their skills at McGill University.
Men’s Team: A Season of new Talent
The men’s team started strong, securing a decisive 4-1 victory against ETS. However, they faced stiffer challenges against UQAM and UQTR, narrowly losing both matches 2-3. The team then went head-to-head with powerhouse programs Montreal and McGill, suffering 1-4 defeats, and concluded the weekend with a 0-5 loss to Laval.With a roster heavily featuring new recruits, Green & Or currently sits in 6th place in the provisional standings.
Standout performances included Olivier,who competed in every #1 singles match,earning three wins in six games and pushing top players from UQAM and McGill to the brink in three-set thrillers. Tristan Bélisle also contributed significantly, racking up three victories over the weekend.
Women’s Team: A Fighting Start
The women’s team demonstrated notable resilience, finishing the tournament with an even record of three wins and three losses. This performance places them in a solid 3rd position in the current rankings. Victories were secured against UQAM (4-1), UQTR (5-0), and McGill (3-2). The team’s defeats came against ETS (2-3), Montreal (1-4), and Laval (2-3).
Individually, Laurence Gagnon was a force to be reckoned with, achieving five wins in six matches, with her lone defeat coming in a hard-fought three-setter. She currently holds the 2nd spot in the league’s individual player standings. Song Ling Chen also delivered a stellar performance, mirroring Gagnon’s record with five wins and one loss, positioning her at 5th in the individual rankings.
Looking Ahead: Key Dates for Fans
Green & Or will continue their season on October 25th and 26th at Laval University for the second competition of the year. Mark your calendars! Sherbrooke will also host the Provincial CSEQ championship from March 6th to 8th, 2026. This will be a prime chance for fans to cheer on their hometown heroes.
