The congress of Local and Regional Authorities, a key institution within the Council of Europe, is sounding the alarm. Rapporteurs from the Congress have highlighted that elected representatives at the local and regional levels are experiencing a surge in intimidation, hate speech, disinformation campaigns, and direct assaults. Unlike their national counterparts who often benefit from enhanced security measures,these grassroots politicians are frequently on the front lines,directly engaging with their constituents and,consequently,becoming more vulnerable.
