Valentini Award: Compagnoni Wins with Emotion

Teh annual Francesco Valentini journalistic award recently celebrated a night of passion and recognition, with a sold-out crowd at the Gigli theater honoring this year’s recipient: veteran sports journalist Maurizio Compagnoni. Hailing from San Benedetto, Compagnoni captivated the audience with a blend of professional insight and wry humor, recounting his early forays into sports journalism. He shared anecdotes like his first invented radio commentary at age 17 and a memorable audition for Tele+ in Milan. “they pointed out I’d worn my tie incorrectly,” he recalled, “It was a traumatic impact, but that’s where my career began.”

Compagnoni’s career, spanning over two decades, extends beyond the gridiron to the track and field. he described the initial complexity of covering athletics, with its myriad of athletes and disciplines, but noted its long-term simplicity compared to football.”On the track, you have no downtime,” he explained, “On the pitch, you do, and as a journalist, you have to be adept at filling those moments.” His commentary experience includes covering major events like the Olympics,a call he described as “exciting.”

The evening also recognized outstanding athletes and teams. federico Mora received an award for his remarkable 700km run at the Swiss Peaks, while Livio Bugiardini was honored as the world champion in the 200m over 75 category. The Porto Sant’Elpidio Baseball team was celebrated as the best team, marking their 60th anniversary. A Solidarity Award was presented to Federico Costantini for his foundational work in establishing charitable, voluntary, and prevention associations in the city and the Fermo area.

family members of the honored figures, including Francesco Valentini’s wife Filomena and son Alessandro, Enzo Belletti’s son Antonio and his wife Moira, and Gabriele Marziali’s children Chiara and Tommaso, were in attendance. Event President Mario Filiaggi expressed his satisfaction, calling the award “an event that goes beyond sport.” Mayor Ciarpella echoed this sentiment, highlighting the honor of hosting such a distinguished journalist and celebrating local athletes and personalities who have made significant contributions. Simona Rolandi, a previous award winner and a familiar face in Porto Sant’Elpidio, also offered her congratulations, especially to her colleague and freind, Maurizio compagnoni.

Compagnoni also shared his viewpoint on contemporary sports journalism, noting the impact of the digital age. “The web has changed our vision,” he stated. “Young people ask me to become sideline players, for visibility, but I remind them there is one profession, and it’s called journalist.” He acknowledged the value of former players and coaches in studio analysis, recognizing their credibility stemming from their on-field experience. “At Sky, we have very well-prepared talents,” he added.
