U20 World Cup: France Reaches Quarters in Overtime Thriller

The Bleuets resurrected the golden goal. During the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the French under-20 team qualified for the quarters of the U20 World Cup Final. A ticket snatched at the end of extra time in its round of 16 against Japan (1-0, ap).

Defensively, the Japanese did not leave much to the Tricolores. But a nice check from Lucas Michal in the opposing area, a hand from his opponent and the intervention of the video assistance offered a penalty to the French in the last minute of extra time (120th + 3).

A bar and a post

Impressive in his composure, Michal brushed his attempt into the right corner. The Bleuets exulted, the Japanese collapsed. It must be said that the “Samurai Blue” dominated the debates.

In the first period, they besieged the French camp. But the Japanese lacked technique and luck in the last move, hitting the bar in the 35th minute and the post 35 seconds later.

If it was able to welcome the success that presented itself to it, Bernard Diomède’s troop also signed a major performance against a team which had won its first three matches of the World Cup. The French had come out of their group more painfully, benefiting from tickets reserved for the best third-place finishers.

In the quarter-finals of the tournament played in Chile, they will challenge Norway, defeater of Paraguay (1-0), on Monday October 13.
