The United States has authorized covert operations in Venezuela, with the CIA receiving the go-ahead for such actions. This directive was confirmed by the American president, who cited concerns over drug smuggling and illegal migration as the primary justifications. The president stated that the Venezuelan leadership was allegedly sending prisoners to the United States and that a significant amount of drugs originates from the country.
This move represents an escalation of pressure on the government of President Nicolas Maduro. Previously, the U.S. increased its military presence in the region, deploying warships to the Caribbean.Since then, several operations have targeted suspected drug vessels, resulting in fatalities. The U.S. government has characterized these military actions as being part of a “non-international armed conflict.”
When questioned about the possibility of the CIA being authorized to target President Maduro directly, the president declined to answer, calling the question “ridiculous.” Though, the administration indicated a shift in focus towards land-based operations, having asserted control over coastal areas. Reports suggest the CIA has been granted authority for operations on Venezuelan soil, though specific plans remain undisclosed.
Recent actions include the destruction of a boat off the Venezuelan coast, which the president stated was carrying alleged drug smugglers. President Maduro has interpreted these actions as part of an effort by Washington to orchestrate his removal from power.
