Maule’s Sports Scene Ignites: FELIDE and U-20 World Cup Showcase Regional Passion
Talca, Chile – The vibrant spirit of sports is alive and well in Chile’s Maule region, as evidenced by the recent success of the U-20 World Cup and the inaugural FELIDE (Sports Book Fair) in Talca. These events, culminating this past Sunday, have not only celebrated the region’s athletic talent but also underscored a growing commitment to fostering an active and engaged community.
luis Verdejo, representing Governor Pedro pablo Álvarez-Salamanca, expressed immense pride in the region’s role. As the government of Maule, we are very proud to have accompanied this great festivity of Maule sports,
Verdejo stated. Both the U-20 World Cup and the FELIDE demonstrated the talent, energy, and commitment of our people to continue building an active, participatory region with an identity.
This sentiment was echoed by Jorge Nazar, a partner at CEDEP, the association behind FELIDE. We are very happy with what FELIDE has been this year, the second edition we held and the first in Talca, together with FILIT. It has been a very enriching experience for everyone,
Nazar commented.
FELIDE: More Than Just Books, It’s a Sports Culture Hub
The Sports Book Fair, FELIDE, proved to be a dynamic convergence of literature, art, and athletic passion. Fifteen national publishers showcased a diverse array of sports-themed publications, engaging attendees with discussions, author presentations, and an insightful infographic exhibition honoring Maule’s sporting legends. The presence of Hernán Rivera Letelier, the 2022 National Literature Prize winner, as a special guest, added significant literary weight to the event, drawing parallels to how celebrated authors in the U.S., like Michael Lewis with his deep dives into sports finance and culture, can elevate the discourse around athletics.
This year’s FELIDE Maule considerably broadened its appeal by integrating new cultural experiences. A standout was FESTIGOL, a captivating series of football films and documentaries screened at the Abate Molina Theater. The event featured over 10 audiovisual pieces, with the Brazilian film “O Último Jogo” receiving particular acclaim. Its screening was followed by a thought-provoking discussion between writer Marcelo Simonetti and Rivera Letelier, inspired by the novel “El Fantasista,” a narrative that likely resonated with fans who appreciate the storytelling behind iconic sports moments, much like the interest with documentaries detailing the rise of athletes or the intricacies of championship runs.
Another highly engaging initiative was the Heritage and Sports Tour of Talca.Utilizing traditional buses, attendees embarked on a free journey through the city’s key ancient, architectural, and sporting landmarks. This concept mirrors successful city tours in the U.S. that often incorporate local sports history, allowing fans to connect with the roots of their favorite teams and athletes. Imagine a tour in Boston that highlights Fenway Park’s storied past alongside revolutionary war sites, or a trip through green Bay that delves into the Packers’ legacy alongside Wisconsin’s agricultural heritage.
The Archers Clinic, held on Sunday, the 12th, at the English School of Talca, was another highlight, offering free training for dozens of young aspiring athletes under the tutelage of accomplished coaches. This hands-on approach to sports growth is crucial, akin to the numerous youth clinics hosted by professional sports organizations across the United States, from basketball camps run by NBA stars to soccer academies led by former Olympians.
it has been a splendid experience, with activities that go beyond literature and that allow us to offer a comprehensive event,
Nazar added. The joint work between the public and private sectors makes possible these valuable initiatives such as the tourist bus or the Festigol, with days in which more than 200 children participated.
The success of FELIDE Maule was a testament to strong regional collaboration, with support from companies and entities including Multicentro, Mayorista 21, PF Alimentos, Huevos Talca, Grupo SCM, and Buses Talca, Paris and London. Additional contributions came from Maty Mechada, Green Club, Argentinos Juniors Talca, Casa de Campo, Hotel Casino Talca, the University of Talca, Soñadores Rojinegros Foundation, Club Rangers, Sernatur, and the National Sports Institute.
Looking Ahead: A Blueprint for Sports Engagement
The combined impact of the U-20 World Cup and FELIDE Maule offers a compelling model for how regions can cultivate a robust sports culture. The integration of international sporting events with local cultural initiatives, like FESTIGOL and the Heritage Tour, creates a multi-faceted experience that appeals to a broad audience.
For U.S. sports enthusiasts, this regional approach highlights the potential for similar initiatives. Imagine a state or city leveraging a major sporting event to host a series of related cultural festivals
