The Italian squad, a dynamic mix of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities, will be among the elite competitors. This initiative builds on the incredible momentum from the recent Special Olympics Unified Volleyball Week in Katowice, Poland. There, the Italian team showcased the same spirit of enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and seamless teamwork that fans have come to expect from Unified sports. The action will unfold at the T-Mobile District in San Juan, a venue designed to accommodate a vibrant atmosphere. Organizers are expecting around 200 athletes and partners, supported by 250 dedicated volunteers. With 250 participants and an estimated 800 spectators cheering each day, the energy will be electric.
Marco Petrozzi, the National Basketball Technical Coordinator for Special Olympics Italy, expressed his excitement: “Taking part in the Puerto Rico World cup is a great possibility for the entire national basketball movement to consolidate the growth path undertaken in recent years by Special Olympics Italy in 3×3 basketball. By flying to San Juan, the Unified Italy Team will try to replicate the great success achieved at the Berlin 2023 summer World Games by the girls of the traditional women’s national team led by Coach Erica Violante who will also be on the Technical Staff next December.” This echoes the kind of dedication and ambition we see in top-tier basketball programs, aiming to build on past successes.
