Kovac becomes clear with Schlotterbeck
Nico Schlotterbeck’s future at Borussia Dortmund remains open. Now coach Niko Kovac is clearly committed to his central defender and is campaigning for him to stay.
Borussia Dortmund coach Nico Kovac is working to extend the contract of national player Nico Schlotterbeck.
“He has a very high status within the team. He also has a very high status among the fans,” said Kovac in one Sky-Interview.
If Kovac has his way, the central defender should of course stay as long as possible: “We are here in the Ruhr region and you need the emotions, the aggressiveness and that’s what he brings with him – in addition to the footballing qualities. That’s why it would be nice if he stayed here longer.”
Schlotterbeck? Will “make right decision”
The 25-year-old central defender knows “what he has at this club,” Kovac added: “I think he also felt during the time when he was injured that he had full support, that every single person here supported him, that we offered him everything humanly possible to help him move forward.” That’s what Schlotterbeck has in mind and he will “certainly make the right decision for himself.”
Schlotterbeck, who moved from SC Freiburg to Dortmund three years ago, is currently hesitant to extend his working paper at BVB, which is dated until 2027.
He had been out since April due to a meniscus injury, but recently played two Bundesliga games lasting 90 minutes. With the national team he is in the World Cup qualifiers before games against Luxembourg (October 10th/Sinsheim) and Northern Ireland (October 13th/Belfast).
