Sam Goodchild Takes Helm of Imoca Macif as Charlie Dalin Shifts to Advisory Role
Le Havre, France – In a significant shift within the high-stakes world of offshore sailing, British sailor Sam Goodchild is set to take the helm of the Imoca Macif, stepping into the primary racing role as Charlie Dalin, the boat’s usual skipper, transitions to an advisory position. This move comes as Dalin, a two-time Vendée Globe competitor, navigates a personal health challenge that will prevent him from undertaking another grueling solo circumnavigation.
Goodchild, a 35-year-old Briton who has been acting as temporary helmsman for Imoca Macif since the season began due to Dalin’s health issues, has already demonstrated his capability. Notably, he adn co-skipper Loïs Berrehar clinched victory in the course des Caps in July, signaling strong form for the upcoming challenges.
Born in Bristol and a long-time resident of France as 2011, Goodchild brings a wealth of experience to the Imoca class. His journey in professional sailing includes extensive training with fellow Welshman Alex Thomson, progressing through Figaro, Class40, and Ocean Fifty classes. He proved his mettle in the last Vendée Globe, securing a ninth-place finish aboard Vulnerable.
Dalin’s New Role: A Strategic Pivot
Charlie Dalin, who recently disclosed his battle with a rare digestive system tumor during the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe, will now serve as a “naval architect advisor” for the construction of the new Macif boat and as a “performance consultant” for the macif team. This strategic pivot allows Dalin to remain deeply involved in the team’s success while prioritizing his health.
I will experience the next Vendée Globe differently, but ultimately, weather on land or at sea,I know that I will experience it just as intensely,
Dalin stated in a press release, underscoring his continued passion for the sport.
The Unrepeatable Challenge of the Vendée Globe
Dalin’s candid reflections on the physical demands of the Vendée Globe are stark. A new Vendée Globe? This is no longer possible. In the current state of science. The disease has evolved, as has the treatment. It’s heavier now. It wouldn’t be possible to do a Vendée Globe again, even if I would have liked. I won the last one, I have incredible memories,
he confided, speaking on the eve of the release of his book, “The Force of Destiny.” this sentiment highlights the extreme physical and mental fortitude required for such an undertaking, akin to an endurance athlete pushing their body to its absolute limit in events like the Tour de France or an ultra-marathon.
Charlotte Yven Joins Macif as co-Skipper
Adding to the Macif team’s strength, Charlotte Yven, who made history as the first woman to podium in the Solitaire du Figaro, will join Sam Goodchild as co-skipper from next season. This partnership promises an exciting dynamic for the Macif campaign.
Upcoming Challenge: Transat Café L’Or
Goodchild and Berrehar are set to compete in the upcoming double-handed Transat Café L’or (formerly the Transat Jacques Vabre) on October 26th. The challenging race will take them from Le Havre to Fort-de-France in Martinique, offering a significant test of their partnership and the Imoca Macif’s capabilities.
This transition within the Macif team raises intriguing questions for the future of offshore racing. How will goodchild’s leadership style impact the team’s performance? Can Dalin’s strategic insights translate into tangible gains for the new boat’s design and performance? For American sports fans, this narrative offers a compelling look into a sport that demands immense personal sacrifice, strategic planning, and cutting-edge technology, much like Formula 1 or America’s Cup sailing.
