This Premier League season is witnessing a historic surge in goals scored directly from corner kicks, marking the highest proportion ever recorded in the championship’s history. In the opening nine days alone, 45 out of 241 goals, a remarkable 19%, originated from corners.
The recent weekend showcased this trend with six goals stemming from corner situations. Notable strikes include a brace from Tottenham’s Dutch defender Micky van de Ven and an “olympic goal” (a goal scored directly from a corner kick) by Tavernier for Iraola’s Bournemouth.
Further examples of corner-kick prowess include Leeds’ second goal against West Ham,a team effort involving Sean Longstaff and Joe Rodon. Brighton’s young talent Charalampos Jostoulas also found the net from a James Milner cross, creating the largest age gap between an assist provider and scorer in Premier League history, standing at 21 years and 146 days.
Aston Villa secured a crucial victory against Manchester City thanks to a Matty Cash goal, which followed a short corner routine. This goal came shortly after Cash’s contract extension was announced, keeping him with the club until 2029.
Beyond corners, the current matchday also featured goals from direct free kicks, such as Danny Welbeck’s strike for Brighton, and from throw-ins, with Brentford and Sunderland benefiting from such plays. Additionally, Eberiche Eze scored a match-winner for Arsenal against Crystal Palace following a direct free kick.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal is currently dominating the Premier League standings, partly fueled by their effectiveness from set pieces. The Gunners have scored six goals from corners this season. These include strikes from Mikel Merino and Gabriel in their comeback win against Newcastle, Trossard’s decisive goal against Fulham, and two goals from Timber against Leeds. Zubimendi also contributed a volleyed goal after a corner play resulted in a rebound.
Looking at recent seasons, Arsenal has been the most prolific team from corner goals since the 2022-2023 season, with a total of 52. Tottenham follows with 36, and Liverpool is third with 32.
