Pogacar Dominates Il Lombardia, Secures Fifth Monument Victory
Tadej Pogacar has once again etched his name in cycling history, clinching his fifth Tour of Lombardy title, the final monument of the season. This remarkable achievement places him in elite company,equaling the legendary Fausto Coppi’s record of five victories in this prestigious Italian race,often dubbed the “Race of the Falling Leaves.”
Coppi, a titan of the sport, secured his five Lombardy wins in the years 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1954. Pogacar,with victories in 2021,2022,2023,2024,and now 2025,stands alone as the only rider to have achieved five consecutive triumphs in this demanding classic.
Il Lombardia is far from a casual end-of-season affair; it’s a brutal test of endurance spanning approximately 240 kilometers, featuring relentless climbs and treacherous descents. While manny riders view this race as a grueling ordeal, Pogacar seems to treat it as his personal playground.
Supported by a formidable UAE Emirates team, which celebrated its 93rd win of the season, the two-time reigning world champion executed his signature aggressive style. Pogacar launched his decisive move 36 kilometers from the finish, bridging the gap to American rider Quinn Simmons. simmons, the U.S.national champion, fought valiantly, holding onto the lead for a important portion of the race, but ultimately couldn’t withstand Pogacar’s relentless pace. with just over 20 kilometers remaining,Pogacar surged ahead,embarking on a solo breakaway that has become a familiar sight for cycling fans.
Remco Evenepoel, considered Pogacar’s main rival, finished in second place, over a minute behind the Slovenian sensation. This mirrors his recent results at the European and world Championships. Michael Storer of Australia rounded out the podium. Young French talent Paul Seixas delivered an impressive performance, securing a strong seventh-place finish.
It’s becoming increasingly clear that challenging Tadej Pogacar at his best is a near-unachievable task.
