Piastri: Better Position Than Norris & Verstappen – F1 2024

Championship leader Oscar Piastri indirectly points out that he still has a solid lead at the top of the table after an unsuccessful weekend in Austin.

As part of this season, for most of which he is at the head of the table, Oscar Piastri is currently experiencing clearly the worst period.

After the triumph in Zandvoort, disappointments came in Monza (third place), in Baku (accident), in Singapore (fourth place) and now also in Austin, where the Australian did not finish the sprint after a collision and subsequently finished fifth on Sunday.

Thus, his lead over both Lando Norris (from 34 to 14 points) and Max Verstappen (from 104 to 40 points) was significantly reduced.

Despite all this, however, Piastri’s five grands prix before the end of the season suggests he is still in the best position of the three title contenders.

“I still prefer where I am compared to those two… Although it is clear that this weekend was not what I wanted or expected,” said Piastri, as quoted by Autosport.

“But this weekend was quite different to the previous two. Baku was obviously a bit of a disaster, but for completely different reasons, and Singapore was what it was, so I think this weekend was kind of an exception to the others,” believes the McLaren pilot, who refuses to admit that the in-form Verstappen should be more of a threat to him now than before.

“You can’t say that. Of course he’s fast, but for me the biggest priority is to find out why this weekend was so difficult for me and at the same time try to get back to the form we had earlier in the season. If we can find that again, the results will come by themselves,” added Piastri.
