Central Java is aiming to revolutionize its basketball scene, moving beyond reliance on government funding to build a lasting sports industry. This ambitious plan, spearheaded by the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) in Central Java, seeks to mirror the success of autonomous sports ventures that have captured the American public’s imagination.
Bagus Andrean John, president of Perbasi Central Java, recently outlined the organization’s vision during a meeting with the provincial governor. “for too long, regional team sports have been tethered to the APBD budget,” John stated, referencing the local government’s funding. “It’s time for basketball to embrace an industrial approach, ensuring our training programs are not just active, but purposeful and enduring.”
This strategic shift, set to gain momentum following the new leadership’s inauguration on September 21, 2025, prioritizes a move away from sole dependence on public funds. The initiative will also actively involve young athletes and small to medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), fostering a symbiotic relationship that benefits all parties.
Drawing parallels to the thriving sports marketing and event management seen in the United States, Perbasi plans to cultivate a thorough basketball ecosystem. this will involve forging partnerships with sponsors, business owners, and educational institutions across all 35 districts and cities in Central Java.”Every competition we organize will integrate three core elements: the sport itself, youth development, and the promotion of MSMEs,” John explained.
The new competition format is slated to kick off in January 2026. Participants will be divided into distinct categories for schools and clubs, with plans to include age groups as young as primary school. “We are meticulously preparing all the necessary components, from qualified referees and accurate match statistics to essential infrastructure,” John added.
the Central Java government, through its Tourism, Sports, and Youth Administration (Disporapar), has pledged its full backing. Masrofi, the head of Disporapar, conveyed the governor’s directive to imbue sports with economic value, not just physical activity. “We wholeheartedly support Perbasi Central Java’s endeavor to elevate basketball beyond a high-performance sport, transforming it into a catalyst for community engagement and a robust sports industry,” he affirmed.
governor Ahmad Luthfi specifically lauded the proposed synergy between basketball leagues, MSME expos, and youth activities. “We are actively encouraging sports to evolve into industries that are not entirely dependent on government subsidies,” he remarked. “Think about how running, cycling, and marathons have become self-sustaining events with unbelievable public enthusiasm in the US. That’s the model we’re aiming for.”
Central Java’s basketball talent has been on an upward trajectory. The provincial team secured a bronze medal at the 2024 National Sports Week (PON) in north Sumatra and Aceh. Furthermore,at the pre-PON event,Central Java athletes clinched both gold and bronze medals. These achievements provide a strong foundation for the upcoming 2025 National Student Sports Week (Popnas) in Jakarta, scheduled from November 1 to 10, 2025. The hope is that this burgeoning sports industry will fuel continued improvement and bring national recognition to Central Java’s basketball programme.
