Paula Ostiz Defends European Junior Time Trial Title in Thrilling Finish

Paula Ostiz has once again proven her dominance on the european cycling scene, successfully defending her Junior european time trial title. The Spanish sensation clinched her second consecutive gold medal in the event, holding off a fierce challenge from Germany’s Magdalena leis by a mere 2.41 seconds. This victory marks Ostiz’s third medal in just nine days, adding to her impressive haul from the World Championships in Kigali, where she secured a silver in the time trial and a gold in the road race.

The 12.2-kilometer course from Allex to Étoile-Sur-Rhône, largely flat, presented a crucial 1.1-kilometer climb at a 5.2% gradient in the final stretch. This decisive ascent proved to be the difference-maker. At the final intermediate check, with 1.5 kilometers remaining, Ostiz trailed Leis by 19 seconds. Though, in a display of remarkable grit and power, the Movistar rider unleashed a stunning comeback on the closing ramps, surging past Leis to claim the victory. The Netherlands’ Megan Arens, the reigning world champion in the specialty, finished third, just over ten seconds behind ostiz.

“The time trial was quite fast,” Ostiz commented after her victory, having averaged an impressive 39.284 kilometers per hour. “I had very good feelings. I thought it would be hard to recover from the trip, but today I got out of bed and saw that I had good legs.” She added, with a touch of disbelief, “when I started the time trial, I was going too easy. I thought, ‘I don’t believe this, this is crazy.’ I reached the finish line and saw I had set the best time.”

Looking ahead, Ostiz is focused on capping off her dream week with another gold medal in Friday’s road race.”It onyl remains to celebrate it with the family, my team, and to think about Friday, that we will surely do well.I have good feelings, the team is strong, so I hope to win and enjoy,” said the rider from Pamplona, who shared an emotional embrace with her mother, Jessica, at the finish line.

In the men’s category, Eñaut Urkaregi delivered a strong performance, securing a fifth-place finish. The cyclist from Larraul finished just 28 seconds shy of the podium. “We regulated our forces very well, and I gave everything I had. The podium was just a few seconds away, but we are happy with the Top 5,” Urkaregi stated.

Ostiz’s teammate, Alejandra Neira, finished in eleventh place in the women’s event, 1 minute and 58 seconds behind the winner.
