Paris Basketball’s Home Game Marred by Security Measures, Ends in Heartbreak Loss
PARIS –
The air inside the arena was thick with anticipation, but not just for the basketball game. As tip-off for Paris Basketball’s recent home matchup approached, a palpable sense of heightened security was evident. While the focus for most fans is the on-court action, this particular evening saw stringent measures in place, primarily aimed at preventing any political displays, specifically concerning the Palestinian flag. Organizers made it clear: only the flags of the competing teams were permitted inside the venue.
This wasn’t the first time such protocols have been implemented. Earlier this year, when Tel aviv’s other basketball club, Maccabi, visited, similar security arrangements were enforced. The expectation is that thes measures will remain in place when the Israeli club is slated to return in April 2026, signaling a consistent approach to managing potential sensitivities at these events.
The atmosphere, however, was somewhat subdued as the game began. The upper tiers of the arena were closed off, resulting in an attendance of only around 3,000 to 4,000 fans. Among the crowd, a small contingent of Hapoel supporters, clad in red, maintained a remarkably calm demeanor. Honestly,I don’t think anyone was genuinely worried about safety,
commented Yoann,a spectator navigating a quiet corridor. It’s just that for Paris Basketball, playing every three days, this wasn’t exactly the marquee matchup of the season that everyone felt compelled to see at all costs. There will be other, bigger games.
He also pointed to other factors contributing to the lower turnout, including the proximity of a Paris Saint-Germain soccer match and the fact that it was a Friday evening, coinciding with the start of a holiday period. There are plenty of other good reasons to explain the low attendance,
he added.
Even the typically vocal “Kop Parisii” fan group, usually the driving force behind the arena’s atmosphere, remained notably reserved. Despite the subdued crowd and the underlying security concerns, the match itself proceeded without any disruptions or incidents.
For Paris Basketball, the evening proved to be a challenging one on the court. they suffered a gut-wrenching, one-point defeat in the final seconds to a team led by veteran Collin Malcom, who was part of thier championship-winning squad last June. we didn’t manage to execute everything we set out to do. It’s a painful loss,
expressed head coach Francesco Tabellini, reflecting on the team’s performance.
