The judges of the Plenary Court decided this Wednesday to suspend the director of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), Rándall Zúñiga, for 15 calendar days.
The “very provisional” measure was taken amidst the accusations of alleged rape that the head of the judicial police is facing.
“The temporary separation will last for a period of 15 business days. This period is intended for the investigation to advance and gather evidence that will allow the issuance of a precautionary measure for a longer period to be assessed.
“The Judiciary reiterates its commitment to transparency, institutionality and justice, as well as absolute respect for the principles of due process and the presumption of innocence,” the Court stated in a press release.
The magistrates have been meeting since this afternoon in an extraordinary manner to hear the case of Zúñiga, criminally investigated after the Public Ministry received at least three different complaints for crimes of a sexual nature.
Deputies, political parties and presidential candidates were pressing for Zúñiga’s removal from office while the investigation against him is carried out.
“The Supreme Court of Justice guarantees the continuity and normal functioning of the Judicial Investigation Agency, whose work in the fight against crime and insecurity remains firm, committed and at the service of the country,” the magistrates concluded.
