Movistar Plus+: Diego San José’s Series Heads to SEMINCI

from Olympic Courts to Second Chances: “Jakarta” Series Hits the mark

Forget the glitz and glamour of the Super Bowl or the roar of a packed NBA arena for a moment. Sometimes, the most compelling sports stories unfold far from the radiant lights,in the gritty reality of everyday life. Movistar Plus+ is set to launch it’s new original series, “Jakarta,” a production that delves into the heart of athletic ambition, personal redemption, and the enduring power of dreams, even when they seem long past their prime.

Produced by 100 Balas (The Mediapro Studio) and Buendía Estudios Canarias, and masterfully crafted by Diego San José, a name synonymous with Spanish comedy hits, “Jakarta” stars Javier Cámara and Carla Quílez. This pairing of seasoned talent and fresh energy promises a narrative that’s as humorous as it is heartfelt, exploring themes of self-advancement and the pursuit of second chances. Think of it as a sports underdog story, but with more existential dread and less Hollywood ending – at least, not yet.

The series is co-directed by Elena Trapé,Javier Cámara himself, and Fernando Hierro-delgado,who also penned the script alongside Diego San José and Daniel Castro. This collaborative effort brings to life a road trip narrative that’s rich in emotion, laced with irony, and offers a poignant look at aspirations that may have been deferred.

Before its streaming debut, “Jakarta” will make its grand entrance at the valladolid International Film Week (SEMINCI) on October 31st. Following this, it will compete in the Official National Section of Serielizados Fest, with a presentation scheduled for November 4th.

At its core, “Jakarta” follows the journey of José Ramón Garrido, a former Olympic badminton player. Once a celebrated athlete, Joserra now finds himself teaching physical education at a public high school in Vallecas. Divorced and feeling the weight of disillusionment, his life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Mar, a teenager with an undeniable natural talent for badminton, at a school tournament.

Seeing in Mar the potential to recapture his own glory, Joserra becomes convinced he can mold her into a champion. For him, its more than just coaching; it’s a chance at personal redemption and the fulfillment of one last, burning dream: to compete in Jakarta. In this city, former badminton stars are revered as true legends, a stark contrast to Joserra’s current reality.

Though, the path to Jakarta is anything but straightforward. Joserra and Mar must navigate a challenging relationship, learning to tolerate each other as they embark on a journey fraught with obstacles. Their travels will take them through a series of less-than-glamorous locales – dilapidated boarding houses, half-empty sports centers, and roadside service stations. Their odyssey across Spain, from Totana to Ponferrada, with stops in Torrelavega and Tardajos, promises to be as chaotic as it is deeply human.

Counterargument: Is this just another predictable sports movie about a coach and a prodigy?

While the premise might sound familiar, “Jakarta” aims to transcend the typical sports narrative. It’s not about the triumphant march to victory that we often see in films like “Miracle” or “Remember the Titans.” Instead, it offers a nuanced portrait of imperfect characters grappling with the realities of life and striving to keep a flicker of hope alive. The series masterfully blends Diego San José’s signature humor with a sensitivity that resonates with the everyday struggles of those who chase their dreams, perhaps at the wrong time or in the wrong circumstances. It’s a story that acknowledges the setbacks and the awkward moments, much like a tough loss in a crucial playoff game, but emphasizes the resilience of the human spirit.

The complete series premieres on November 6th on Movistar Plus+, where it will be available on demand. For sports fans who appreciate stories that go beyond the scoreboard and explore the personal triumphs and tribulations of athletes, “Jakarta” promises to be a compelling watch.
