Associations

Instructor Maaike is making waves, not just in the exercise garden at Meander, but also with her innovative sports trial program. For the past year and a half, she’s been offering a unique opportunity for individuals to dip their toes into new athletic pursuits before committing to a full-time club. in a recent chat with Wegwijs, Maaike shared the passion behind this initiative.

The “exercise tasting,” as Maaike calls it,is designed for those hesitant to jump headfirst into a sports association without prior experience. There are quite a few peopel who find it exciting to join an association promptly as thay have no experience yet. With me they can see whether the sport is something for them and gain the first experience, maaike explained with infectious enthusiasm.

The program offers a diverse range of sports, from the familiar roar of a soccer field to the swift volleys of badminton and the fast breaks of basketball. The ultimate goal is simple: That participants can join a sports club or association from me, with already a little bit of experience. While there’s no strict age cap, a baseline level of fitness is recommended. Maaike estimates the average participant age hovers between 40 and 50, though she’s seen active individuals in their thirties join as well.

Maaike leads several groups, including a special women’s session on Wednesday mornings at 11 a.m., tailored for those with a migration background. That is our women’s group, which is a bit better suited to the faith they have. But it is also important for them to exercise, so we have put it together this way.We do that in ‘t Achterom and the exercise is going very well, she noted.

In the evenings,Maaike runs a mixed group at 6 p.m. in the Buzzard. While it’s a co-ed session, women currently outnumber the men. So more men are certainly welcome, I would really like that! she urged.

each one-hour session kicks off with a dynamic warm-up, followed by a blend of sports and games where participants can try out the various disciplines. The group is getting bigger and I get a lot of positive reactions, hopefully it will continue like this, Maaike concluded, optimistic about the program’s growth.
