Calcium is probably the most overrated mineral of our time. While everyone runs after milk, cheese and supplements in the belief that they are doing what is best for their bones, scientific reality tells a much more nuanced and, in some cases, worrying story.
The myth of milk as an irreplaceable source
“Drink milk for strong bones!” How many times have we heard it? Yet epidemiological data show a disturbing paradox: Nordic countries, where dairy consumption is among the highest in the world, also record the highest rates of osteoporotic fractures. Norway, for example, with an average consumption of 350kg of dairy products per capita per year, has double the incidence of hip fractures compared to countries such as Japan, where consumption is ten times lower.
The problem is that calcium alone does not make bone. Bone health depends on a complex balance between vitamin D, magnesium, vitamin K, physical activity and, paradoxically, also on the ability to retain the calcium we already have. Dairy products, being rich in animal proteins, can increase the acidity of the blood and promote urinary calcium excretion, partially nullifying the intake itself.
More calcium doesn’t always mean stronger bones
The most recent studies have demolished the simplistic equation “more calcium = stronger bones”. A meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal, which analyzed over 44 clinical studies, concluded that increasing calcium intake beyond 700-800mg per day does not produce significant benefits in the prevention of fractures.
Even more interesting is the fact that populations with relatively low calcium intakes (400-500mg per day) but with active lifestyles and diets rich in vegetables often show a higher bone density than those who take 1200-1500mg daily but lead a sedentary lifestyle.
Supplements can be counterproductive
Here’s where things get really worrying. Calcium supplements, especially high-dose ones, have been associated in several studies with an increase in cardiovascular risk. The reason? Massive doses of calcium taken together can alter the balance with other minerals, in particular magnesium, and promote calcification of the arteries.
A New Zealand study of more than 1,400 women showed a 30% increased risk of heart attack in women who took calcium supplements compared to those who didn’t.
The crucial difference lies in the method of intake: dietary calcium is absorbed gradually throughout the day, whereas calcium from supplements creates spikes in the blood that the body struggles to manage.
Vegetable calcium is more bioavailable
Contrary to popular belief, the calcium present in dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, broccoli and arugula has a higher bioavailability than that of milk. While we absorb around 30% of the calcium present from milk, we get 50-60% from vegetables such as Chinese cabbage.
Furthermore, these foods simultaneously provide other nutrients essential for bone health: vitamin K, magnesium, potassium and folate. Sesame seeds, almonds and dried figs represent concentrated sources that are easily used by the body.
The obsession with 1200mg is unfounded
The World Health Organization recommendations speak of 500-700mg of calcium per day for adults, figures significantly lower than the 1200mg often proposed by the food industry. This difference is not coincidental: Higher recommendations are often based on studies funded by the dairy or supplement industries.
Populations that traditionally consume moderate amounts of calcium but maintain active lifestyles and balanced diets show excellent bone health even in old age. The secret lies not in the quantity, but in the balance and ability of the body to effectively use the available calcium.
The real enemies of bones are others
While we focus obsessively on calcium, we ignore the real mineral thieves: excess salt, smoking, alcohol, a sedentary lifestyle and high-protein diets. Just one can of cola contains enough phosphoric acid to impair calcium absorption for hours.
Vitamin D, often overlooked, is much more important than calcium itself: without it we can consume all the calcium in the world, but we will absorb only 10-15%. This is why a walk in the sun is worth more than a glass of milk for bone health.
The reality is that we have turned an important mineral into a commercial obsession, losing sight of the holistic approach that truly protects our bones.
