Marchand Loses 200m Breaststroke – Short Course Result

The 23-year-old Frenchman, who had not swum competitively since the Worlds, ended his three days in Carmel without a victory.

The four-time Olympic champion from Paris Léon Marchand was beaten on Sunday in the 200m breaststroke by the Dutchman Caspar Corbeau at the conclusion of his return competition at the short course World Cup stage in Carmel (Indiana, United States).

The French double world champion in August in Singapore (200m medley and 400m medley) improved his French record by almost a second in 2 min 02 sec 00 (compared to 2:02.99 last year), but did not completely manage to come back at the end of the race on Corbeau (2:01.63). Marchand (23 years old), who had not swum competitively since the Worlds, thus ended his three days in Carmel without a victory.

On Saturday, he was dominated in the 200m medley by his training partner in Austin (Texas) Shaine Casas, after being beaten on Friday in the 200m backstroke by Hubert Kos, another swimmer coached by Bob Bowman, and took 3rd place in the 400m freestyle.

Marchand is not expected to compete in the Asian stages of the short course World Cup, and is expected to return to competition at the US Open swimming event in early December in Austin.

The American Gretchen Walsh, who broke the world record in the 50m butterfly on Saturday, won the 100m butterfly on Sunday in 53 sec 69.
