It has been accepted by the club and Brendan will leave his role with immediate effect,” the Glasgow club said in a statement. “The club appreciates Brendan’s contribution during his two successful spells here. He leaves with gratitude for the role he has played in this period of continued success and we wish him all the best for the future.”
Celtic also reported that the process to hire a new permanent coach is ongoing and that, for now, Martin O’Neill, who already coached the Catholics twenty years ago, will take over as interim coach.
O’Neill was with the Hoops from 2000 to 2005 and won three Scottish leagues, three Scottish cups and a League Cup, as well as leading Celtic to the UEFA final, which they lost in 2003 against Port of Jose Mourinho. His last job as a coach was in the Nottingham Forest in 2019.
Rodgers’ departure comes after the weekend defeat against the Heartswhich leaves the Glasgow team eight points behind the top of the table in the Scottish league. If Hearts end up winning the title, it would be the first time in forty years that the champion is not Celtic or the Rangers.
In the Europa League, Celtic has had a victory, a draw and a defeat and occupies twenty-first position in the league phase standings.
Change of plans for Luis Palma
The news can change the future of Luis Palmasince it was Rodgers who took away his confidence in Scotland, this despite a good first season where the Honduran shone in the local championship and the Champions League.
Lech Poznan, where Palma is on loan, intends to offer 4 million euros to keep the catracho permanently, but Brendan’s departure opens an opportunity for a return, depending on who the permanent coach is.
It sounds a lot Angelos Postecoglouwhich is historic for the club and could return. He was recently fired from Nottingham Forest and before that he won the Europa League with Tottenham.
Luis Palma has recovered his best version at Lech Poznan, but the owner of his contract is Celtic. The Honduran signed until June 2027.
