La U: South American Final Hope Alive After Draw

Atlético’s possible opponent in the Copa Sudamericana final seemed to be close to being defined. On Thursday night (10/23), Lanús beat the University of Chile 2-1 away from home, at the National Stadium of Chile, in Santiago, until the final minutes. But, in stoppage time, La U equalized and left the dispute open

The Argentine team’s two goals were scored by striker Rodrigo Castillo, in the 25th and 29th minutes of the game. In the 24th minute of the second half, striker Lucas di Yorio, ex-Athletico-PR, reduced the score for La U and, in the 54th minute of the second half, midfielder Charles Aránguiz, idol of the Chilean national team, equalized with a penalty kick.

With the result, each team needs to win – by any score – the return game to reach the final. In case of a draw, the match will be decided on penalties.

The second game is scheduled for next Thursday (10/30), at the Ciudad de Lanús Stadium, in Lanús, Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Atlético’s situation in the fight for the South American final

Atlético competes for the other place in the Copa Sudamericana final with Independiente del Valle, from Ecuador.

In the first leg, Galo scored a 1-1 draw with a goal from striker Dudu in second-half stoppage time, at the Banco Guayaquil Stadium, in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

This way, Galo can win by any score in the return, next Tuesday (28/10), at Arena MRV, to qualify for the decision, which will be on November 22nd (Saturday), at the La Nueva Olla stadium, in Asunción, Paraguay. A draw takes the duel to penalties and the Ecuadorians’ victory qualifies them for the next phase.
