A staggering 1.5 million euros, meant to fuel athletic endeavors and support sports, has been siphoned off by three individuals connected to World Athletics. The international governing body for track and field has lifted the lid on an internal scandal, revealing that two of its own employees and a contracted consultant orchestrated a years-long theft from the organization’s funds.
World Athletics, under the leadership of President sebastian Coe, announced the revelation of the embezzlement earlier this year. While one employee departed before facing accusations, the contracts of the remaining two were terminated following a thorough internal investigation, reportedly aided by digital forensics.
The organization confirmed that thorough documentation of the illicit activities has been compiled and submitted to judicial and legal authorities, initiating a criminal investigation. The sophisticated scheme spanned several years before being brought to light by World Athletics’ newly implemented financial oversight team, which has since bolstered internal controls across the board.
Earlier this year World Athletics uncovered the systematic theft of money from the organisation by two employees and a contracted consultant.
Detailed cases have been prepared and handed over to the relevant judicial and legal authorities for criminal investigation.

Transparency in the Face of Adversity
In a statement, Sebastian Coe addressed the situation, acknowledging the unfortunate reality of corporate theft. Unfortunately, corporate theft occurs in organizations around the world and in every industry sector, at different levels,
Coe stated. We are also resolute to recover whatever monies we can using all legal means at our disposal.
Coe emphasized the importance of openness, even when it’s challenging. Too many organizations ignore these types of incidents,
he continued. We have built a strong reputation for good governance, transparency and standing up for what is right, even if it can sometimes be a little uncomfortable. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s vital that we do what’s right.
This commitment to transparency, Coe believes, is crucial for maintaining trust and integrity within the sport.
