Hamburger SV (HSV) continues its impressive ascent in the Bundesliga, leaving FSV Mainz 05 in a deepening mire. The newly promoted side secured their second victory of the season, a commanding 4-0 triumph over a European competition participant, extending their unbeaten streak to three matches. Early goals from Sambi Lokonga in the 6th minute, his first for HSV, and Rayan Philippe in the 10th minute, established a decisive early lead. The second half saw Jean-Luc Dompé (52nd minute) and Philippe again (61st minute) seal the emphatic win.
The disappointing performance leaves Mainz languishing in the lower half of the table wiht just four points after six matchdays, heading into the international break. In contrast, Hamburg has climbed into the mid-table with eight points. Before a sell-out crowd of 57,000 at the Volksparkstadion, HSV dictated the early proceedings. Mainz coach Bo Henriksen made five changes to his starting lineup following their Europa Conference League victory, a decision that proved costly. The absence of goalkeeper Robin Zentner, replaced by Lasse Rieß, was immediately felt. Rieß’s debut was marred when, on HSV’s first significant attacking foray, Lokonga found the net. The midfielder, deputizing for the suspended Fabio Vieira, capitalized after Rieß could onyl parry Giorgi Gocholeishvili’s shot onto the post. Just four minutes later, Philippe doubled the advantage with his second goal of the season, converting HSV’s second attack.
Mainz’s custodian Rieß was tested again, making saves against Philippe (16th minute) and Ransford Königsdörffer (17th minute). However, the Rheinhessen struggled to penetrate Hamburg’s defense, marshaled effectively by the young Luka Vuskovic. The absence of defender Warmed Omari was not keenly felt. National player Nadiem Amiri attempted to spark his team’s play but to little avail. Kaishu Sano’s speculative shot from 20 yards represented mainz’s most dangerous moment, forcing a save from HSV goalkeeper Daniel heuer Fernandes. Reflecting on the first half, HSV’s sporting director Claus Costa expressed satisfaction, stating to “DAZN,” “We are very pleased. On the one hand, of course, with the result, but also with the way we are playing: very intensive, very solid – that looks good.”
In the second half, Mainz coach Henriksen introduced attacker Nelson weiper, but the momentum remained firmly with Hamburg. Philippe (49th minute) and his compatriot Dompé (51st minute) squandered further opportunities before Dompé finally broke through, with Rieß appearing somewhat culpable on the shot. By the time Philippe netted his second and HSV’s fourth goal just after the hour mark, the outcome was no longer in doubt.
