Eisteddfod Archery: Competition Expansion Confirmed

Within the framework of the Eisteddfod of Chubut, the award ceremony for the first archery competition took place – the “Competition 108”, organized by Sebastián Pérez Astutti – which marked an unprecedented sporting incorporation to the traditional festival of Welsh culture in Chubut.

The winner of the contest was Sebastián Pérez Parry, from the Ceferino club, who received as first prize a handmade arrow of very high symbolic and cultural value. This arrow is composed of an obsidian tip carved by archaeologist Mariano Reyes using ancient techniques; ñanco eagle feathers, a symbol of good fortune, collected by biologist Gonzalo Herrera; and an oak shaft assembled by cabinetmaker Andrés Koss. On the body of the arrow stands out the engraving of the legend in Welsh “Y gwir yn erbyn y byd” (the truth before the world), the motto of the festival.

In the competition, the modality consisted of shooting 4 arrows in less than 45 seconds, in two rounds of direct elimination against an opponent. In second place was Carolina Escalada, from the Arqueros del Golfo Club, and in third place was Jimena Velásquez, from the Arqueros del Virch club.
The organization already anticipated that for next year’s edition the modality will be expanded: participants must shoot 6 arrows in 1 minute, raising the competitive challenge.

This innovative sporting competition – archery – is incorporated again, reaffirming the festival’s commitment to tradition, Welsh culture and innovation in its activities, since this discipline was present in the first Eisteddfod held.
