Imagine the roar of the crowd, the smell of popcorn, and the thrill of competition – now imagine that atmosphere transplanted to a retirement community. that’s exactly what happened at Serge Bertenpark in Menen,which transformed into a vibrant campsite from May 12 to 16. Tents, caravans, crackling campfires, and classic recreational activities like badminton and manila games created a genuine holiday vibe, all thanks to the “Camping Dichtbij” initiative.
The mastermind behind this unique concept was liesbeth soen, an occupational therapist at WZC Andante. Her goal was simple yet profound: to bring the joy and relaxation of a holiday to the 188 residents. And the mission was accomplished. While not all residents stayed overnight, a remarkable 90 percent participated. “We also welcomed children, family, and even passers-by,” Liesbeth shared. “At our peak, we had over 100 visitors.”

A Look Back at the Festivities
The road to “Camping Dichtbij” involved a full year of planning. Even though the nights during the camping week were short – partly due to thunderstorms and a brief power outage – the enthusiasm remained undimmed. The residential care center kicked off Tuesday afternoon with a slideshow in the cafeteria, a perfect way to relive the highlights.
Alderman for Care, renaat Vandenbulcke (FOOR 8930), echoed the sentiment of success. This initiative offered us so much more than just relaxation. The residents truly blossomed,volunteers and employees connected,and together they created an unforgettable atmosphere. It definitely leaves us wanting more.
And the desire for more is already being acted upon. A second edition is officially planned for 2026. During the recent wrap-up event, it was announced that “Camping Dichtbij” will return to Serge Berten Park from June 1 to 5, with tents once again ready to be pitched.
