The Schneider family regularly went to the games. “I remember it well. It was a small hall, always narrow, always loud. The fans were unique. I would have to ask my parents if we were in the hall against Trier in 2001.”

That was almost a quarter of a century ago. Since then, Trier has kept its clean slate in cup games against Bonn. However, there was only one other meeting, which Trier won in 2002. “Wow, I didn’t realize that at all,” said coach Jacques Schneider when he found out this week which “cup series” his team was defending on Friday evening (8 p.m., Arena Trier).

This will certainly be turbulent and take the mood to a new level

The Gladiators are expecting more than 200 fans from Bonn for the cup derby. “It’s great that so many Bonn fans are coming. It will be turbulent and take the atmosphere in the hall to a new level,” says Gladiators coach Jacques Schneider, looking forward to the derby.

Bonn with two recent wins in the Bundesliga

After two defeats at the start of the season, the team from Bonn has recently gotten into better shape. There were victories against Oldenburg and Hamburg. The Trier coach was particularly impressed by the game against Hamburg. “They come with some very athletic players who have already played at a higher level. They showed their potential against Hamburg. We have respect for the task.”

Despite the surprising winning streak at the start of the Basketball Bundesliga season, there was a need for improvement in Trier this week.

The home win in the Bundesliga against Braunschweig was more difficult than expected, says the coach: “It was a bit surprising for us to be favorites in a game for the first time. Mentally, that was something different than, for example, in the game against Berlin. We were able to play freely as outsiders.” Things were suddenly different against Braunschweig: “We were very tense.”

Braunschweig was the first team to do a good job of suppressing the Gladiators’ strengths, namely their quick attacks. “We have been working on how we can find better solutions,” says Jacques Schneider. “Fortunately, we are now stronger in defense. That helps in games like this.” Promoted Stories Trier currently has the best statistical values of all teams in the Bundesliga when it comes to defensive behavior.
