San Juan, Puerto Rico – The vibrant atmosphere surrounding the upcoming basketball events at the iconic Coliseum of Puerto rico, affectionately known as “Choli,” was recently marred by a shooting incident that left approximately twenty windows shattered.In response,police superintendent Joseph González announced on Friday that security measures,including increased patrols,surveillance,and resources,will be significantly bolstered around the venue.
“We understand that both visitors and residents of Puerto Rico, fans, and the families of the players have plans to enjoy this weekend’s activities at the Choli,” González stated. “Incidents like this morning’s can certainly influence their decision to attend.”
The Coliseum, a premier entertainment hub on the island, recently hosted a record-breaking 31-concert residency by global music superstar Bad Bunny. This weekend, it’s set to pivot to the hardwood for two significant basketball matchups. Friday night features a celebrity game with former athletes and artists, followed by Saturday night’s NBA preseason clash between the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic.
The shooting, reportedly carried out by six individuals on motorcycles, led to the cancellation of a scheduled press conference for the events. Police are actively investigating and collecting evidence at the scene.
“I can guarantee that the Puerto Rico Police Department has taken all necessary measures to ensure these events proceed in the safest and most orderly manner possible,” González assured. he emphasized that no resources have been spared in ensuring stadium security and investigating the incident, which, while causing property damage, thankfully resulted in no injuries.
Verónica Ferraiuoli, executive director of the convention Center District Authority, confirmed that access to the Coliseum’s interior will remain restricted until the authorities conclude their investigation. Our priority is to guarantee the safety of all visitors, artists, athletes, and personnel who enter and trust our venues,
Ferraiuoli said.
This is not the first time the Coliseum has been targeted.In 2019, a similar shooting incident occurred, also resulting in broken windows. At that time, the venue was hosting concerts by artists like Daddy Yankee (now known as Dy) and Anuel AA. speculation at the time suggested the attack might have been a protest against anuel AA’s performance, a theory that has resurfaced given his confirmed participation in the upcoming celebrity game.
Superintendent González acknowledged that multiple theories are being explored regarding the motivations and perpetrators of the shooting. It is indeed not my responsibility to speculate or discuss any theories publicly until the investigation concludes,
he stated.
