Barcelona’s Shock Friendly: Cash Grab or Clever Move?

FC Barcelona, after its La Liga match in the USA with Villarreal was scrapped, is reportedly close to finalizing a lucrative friendly match with the Peru national team in December.

Sources close to the Catalan club,as reported by the Spanish publication Sport, indicate that Barcelona is in the advanced stages of negotiations for a friendly match to be held in Peru. This move comes as a welcome financial boost, especially after the club’s ambitious plan to play a league fixture against Villarreal in Miami fell through. That proposed match was expected to generate approximately six million euros, making this new prospect especially timely for Barcelona’s coffers.

The deal is being negotiated directly with a prominent Peruvian businessman aiming to bring the Spanish giants to Lima’s iconic Estadio Nacional. The intention is to field a squad featuring most of barcelona’s star players for this high-profile encounter.

Arsene Wenger has explained why Real Madrid outperformed Barcelona in the first El clásico of the season. “White Ballet” won 2:1 in the match of the 10th round of the Spanish La Liga.

While initial discussions may have involved Peru’s top clubs, Universitario and Alianza Lima, the focus has now shifted to a match against the national team. This arrangement offers a unique opportunity for the Peruvian squad to test emerging talent, as the game would not fall on an official FIFA international break, allowing for experimentation with younger players.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reportedly briefed his management and the squad on the potential financial benefits of this friendly. However, the final green light will hinge on discussions involving the club, Spanish football authorities, and the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE).
