Arsenal maintained the lead in the English Premier League this Saturday with a narrow victory against Fulham (0-1).
The ‘Gunners’, who host Atlético de Madrid this Tuesday in the Champions League, solved another match thanks to the set piece, their best weapon and with which they have scored more than a third of their goals in the competition.
Against Fulham, in a match marked by refereeing, the decisive touch came from Leandro Trossard, who scored the winning goal from a corner at the far post.
It cost Mikel Arteta’s team, who in the first half saw Riccardo Calafiori’s goal disallowed for offside. Not breaking the deadlock in the first half made Arsenal’s game stagnant, as Fulham began to dare to give David Raya a scare.
Between Alex Iwobi and Raúl Jiménez they created some clear chances for Marco Silva’s men, who came into this match with several important losses, but they did not achieve results and Trossard did not forgive set pieces.
In a corner, Gabriel, the target man of this team, combed the ball at the first post and Trossard, always attentive, pushed it at the second, getting rid of the mark of Tom Carney and Jiménez, who could only show his frustration with the net. I knew that goal was surely going to cost them defeat.
Already with 0-1 on the scoreboard, Anthony Taylor pointed out a penalty from Kevin to Bukayo Saka, which was revoked by the VAR after noticing that the Brazilian had touched the ball before knocking down the English winger. The technology reviewed again minutes later a possible grab on Viktor Gyökeres, but did not intervene to award a maximum penalty that would have relaxed Arsenal’s final minutes.
The narrow victory was enough for Arteta’s team, who added another clean sheet and brought Raya closer to the Premier League Golden Glove. The Spanish international is first in this classification, tied on five clean sheets with Nick Pope of Newcastle United.
Arsenal regains the lead that Manchester City had momentarily taken from them by beating Everton. The Londoners are first with three points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s team and four points ahead of Liverpool, who host Manchester United at Anfield this Sunday.
With the Premier on hold for now, Arsenal’s next target is Atlético de Madrid, whom they will welcome this Tuesday at the Emirates Stadium. There, the ‘Gunners’ will try to maintain their impeccable record in the Champions League, with six out of six points after beating Athletic Club de Bilbao and Olympiakos.
Fulham remains fourteenth with eight points, three above the relegation mark currently marked by Nottingham Forest.
