Zigui Basketball: Carbon Neutral Event with 49.25 Ton Offset

Hubei Daily (Reporter Wan Leimeng, Correspondent Wang An, Zheng Xiaoyi, Lu Bipan) From September 4 to September 7, the 2025 China Men’s Three-Player Basketball Super League Zigui Qu Yuan Hometown Championship hosted by the China Basketball Association successfully concluded in the Zigui Qu Yuan Hometown Cultural Tourism Zone. With the promotion and technical support of the Forestry Bureau of Zigui County, the event successfully achieved carbon neutrality, becoming the first large-scale sports event in Zigui County to achieve this goal, and also added another practical case to the “zero carbon” event in Yichang.

The carbon neutrality of this event was achieved through the purchase and declaration of 49.25 tons of approved and registered forestry carbon emission reduction of Zigui Jiulingtou Forest Farm, which successfully offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the event, marking a key step for Zigui in ecological value transformation and green event hosting.

Forestry carbon sink refers to the process of using the carbon storage function of forests, reducing deforestation and other activities through afforestation, reforestation and forest management, absorbing and fixing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and combining it with carbon sink trading according to relevant rules. According to the “Guiding Opinions on the Subscription of Forestry Carbon Sinks for Large-scale Activities in Yichang City”, various large-scale activities can achieve carbon neutrality by calculating carbon emissions and subscribing to equal amounts of forestry carbon sinks. In this event, scientific accounting methods were used to accurately calculate the carbon footprint from all aspects such as transportation, electricity, food and accommodation, and finally offset it through Zigui Forestry Carbon Tickets.

The carbon neutrality practice of this event is a vivid epitome of Yichang City’s implementation of the concept of “green water and green mountains are gold and silver mountains” and promoting the “dual carbon” goal. According to reports, in the next step, Yichang will continue to deepen the development of forestry carbon sinks, promote more fields and more activities to achieve green transformation, and make green waters and green mountains truly a mountain of gold and silver that benefits the people.
