Wong Tat Meng: Badminton Coach Critical After Sydney Crash

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Veteran Malaysian badminton coach Wong Tat Meng is in critical condition following a serious motorcycle accident in Sydney on Sunday.

According to New Straits Times (NST), Australian media reported that the crash involved two motorcycles along Putty Road in the Garland Valley area. One rider was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second — identified as a 58-year-old man — was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to hospital in critical condition.

Former national shuttler Datuk James Selvaraj confirmed to NST that the injured rider is Wong, who is currently being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Wong, an experienced and widely respected figure in international badminton, had relocated to Australia after a decorated coaching career. Most recently, he played a key role in guiding Lee Zii Jia to a men’s singles bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He later stepped down from his role after his contract ended on December 31, 2024 and moved to Sydney.
