The current runner -up of the world of Freestyle, Mar de Arce, will participate in the Ibiza Wingfoil Open that will be held between October 3 and 5 in Portmany Bay under the organization of the Nàutic Sant Antoni Club and the Royal Spanish Vela Federation.
The evidence, sponsored by the insular consell d’Eivissa, Café del Mar and Balearia, already has 30 registered although around 80 specialists from Europe are expected to participate.
Ibiza Wingfoil Open will be a Spanish Cup for the Wingfoil Racing modality. This competition is unique since competitors do not leave the beach, as usual, but assemble in boats until they find the most favorable wind area for competition.
Mar de Arce has been competing in water sports for 14 years, especially in Windsurf, a modality in which he has achieved numerous international titles in different modalities and categories.
The athlete has won the victory in one of the World Cup tests held in Tarifa and again has been proclaimed runner -up of the Freestyle world. In addition, it currently occupies the third position in the Slalom circuit, in the absence of the last test of the year.
In 2024 he was runner -up of the world of Freestyle and third in the world in Slalom, and in 2023 he made history by conquering in Gran Canaria the first women’s victory of Big Air in the world circuit.
The Nàutic Sant Antoni Club, which organizes the event together with the Royal Spanish Vela Federation, has been promoting the modality for several years and carrying out multiple training activities and regattas. The new nautical center, which the entity will open in 2026, will be a point of reference on the island, in which this and other wind sports will continue to be promoted.
The origin of the IWO must be placed four years ago, when an event company proposed to the CNSA the organization of one of its circuit tests and it accepted. However, in the organizational process, doubts arose regarding the competition zone, since the orographic configuration of Sant Antoni, very attractive to numerous nautical and sports activities, did not adapt to the nature of the test. Given this difficulty and the desire to carry out an event of this size, the idea of using a tourist ferry arose to embark the participants to the interior area of the Bay with better wind and the idea worked perfectly, by also avoiding the traffic and influx of vessels and contributing to color, fun and safety to the competition. 70 specialists from all over the country participated last year.
