Max Verstappen Sets Sights on Nürburgring 24 Hours, Earns Crucial License
Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen is embarking on a new and ambitious chapter in his racing career, with a clear target: conquering the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours. To achieve this dream, the Dutch phenom recently tackled the iconic German circuit, securing a vital racing license.
Verstappen participated in a Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport, a potent 300-horsepower machine, in a guest category within the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) championship. The Nürburgring’s stringent requirements for top-tier endurance races necessitate a specific DMSB Permit Nordschleife. to earn this, drivers must complete 14 demanding laps on the notoriously challenging Nordschleife circuit.Verstappen faced a field primarily composed of amateur racers as he worked towards this goal.
While some competitors in more powerful vehicles naturally outpaced Verstappen and his teammate Chris Lulham, their objective wasn’t outright victory in this particular event. The primary mission was license acquisition, a mission successfully accomplished.
“I’m glad everything went smoothly and I obtained the DMSB Permit Nordschleife,” Verstappen shared with a smile post-race. “I had a good time, but that’s always a given on this track. It was incredibly beneficial to get the chance to complete several stints under race conditions, navigating traffic and slower cars. We also encountered double yellow and single yellow flag situations.”
The versatile conditions provided invaluable experience. “I drove in the rain, on a dry track, and in conditions somewhere in between,” Verstappen elaborated. “I learned where there was more and less grip, and I also practiced my starts. It was fantastic to gain more experience on this circuit.”
With the DMSB Permit Nordschleife now in his possession, Verstappen is no longer obligated to participate in the NLS8 race on Sunday. His immediate focus shifts to the upcoming Formula 1 Grand prix in Baku. However, the door is now open for him to compete in another NLS event in two weeks, possibly behind the wheel of a GT3-spec car, with speculation pointing towards a Ferrari 296 GT3 from the Emil Frey Racing team.
Should this materialize,it would mark an intense period of racing, with Verstappen potentially competing in five races across five consecutive weekends. This level of multi-series engagement echoes the feats of motorsport legends like Jim Clark, who in 1965 competed in an astounding 63 races globally, a testament to dedication in an era before widespread long-distance air travel.
“A circuit like the Nordschleife is truly unique,” Verstappen emphasized. “It’s an incredibly demanding track. Today, we saw firsthand how one part of the track can be dry while another is wet. Even the asphalt itself varies substantially across different sections. It’s difficult to connect these individual segments into a cohesive whole, which is precisely what makes it such an exceptional place.”
