FC Twente lost 1-0 to visit Excelsior on Saturday evening, while the team of coach Joseph Oosting even played against ten men for a long time. Former professional football player Kees Luijckx was critical afterwards about the club from Enschede.
“Players are not in shape at all, missing convictions, are next to it. It is not a tactical story of Twente,” he said at ESPN. “These are players, there is so little of it. If a structure runs well, they will lose the ball again in midfield, if there is an attack correct then a big chance is missed. This is not just good I have to tell you very honestly, that is my feeling,” predicts Luijckx.
“Twente has to come from very far. It is not that they play Excelsior today, that they created many opportunities and could say that it did not go well,” continues the analyst, who saw that Ricky van Wolfswinkel dropped through the lower limit. The experienced center striker killed some great opportunities and managed it (again) to lose the easiest balls. “Ricky is having a hard time at the moment and is not in shape either. He really has to be the second striker and if lammers is not there once that he can just go loose for a while,” explains Luijckx.
“But now it’s too much for him, he doesn’t get it done. Together with Zerrouki and Pröpper, they just don’t get it done,” he realizes. “It’s not only a tactical story. It is also the players who just don’t have the form totally. Are they going to take it? That is the question, can they fight back in the competition? It will be very difficult for them. I predict a very difficult season,” concludes Luijckx pessimistic.
